Mixed bacterial toxins in the treatment of tumors. I. Methods of preparation and effects on normal and sarcoma 37-bearing mice.

چکیده
Neoplasms have been reported to regress in patients subsequent to acute streptococcal infec tions. Treatment of human tumors with an in duced bacterial infection was attempted in 1868 by Busch (2), who had observed clinical improve ment in cancer patients following an attack of erysipelas. Fehleisen (7) established streptococci as the causative agents of erysipelas and obtained encouraging results when live streptococcus cul tures were injected into cancer patients. W. B. Coley (3) attempted to induce erysipelas with virulent streptococcus cultures in patients who had inoperable malignant tumors. Because of the difficulties and dangers involved, he later resorted to heat-killed organisms. To these he added Bacil lus prodigiosus (Serratia marcescens) toxins, which had been reported (20) to enhance the virulence of streptococci. The many different preparations of "Coley's Mixed Toxins" and the case histories of

Preparation, distribution, stability and tumor imaging properties of [62Zn] bleomycin complex in normal and tumor-bearing mice
Backgrounds: Bleomycin (BLM) has been labeled with radioisotopes and widely used in therapy and diagnosis. In this study BLM was labeled with [62Zn] zinc chloride for oncologic PET studies. Materials and methods: The complex was obtained at the pH=2 in normal saline at 90 ° C in 60 min. Radio-TLC showed an overall radiochemical yield of 95-97% (radiochemical purity > 97%). Stability of complex ...
متن کاملMixed bacterial toxins in the treatment of tumors. III. Effect of tumor removal on the toxicity and mortality rates in mice.
that bacterial toxins from Serr&ia rnarc&wena and Streptococcus pyogenes are considerably less toxic when adminis tered to normal mice than when given to mice bearing Sarcoma 37 (1, @). A @0-to SO-fold dosage increase of the toxins is required to produce tissue changes and mortality rates in normal mice equiv alent to those produced in tumor-bearing animals. This difference in susceptibility co...
متن کاملMixed bacterial toxins in the treatment of tumors. II. Gross and microscopic changes produced in sarcoma 37 and in mouse tissues.
Mixed bacterial toxins have been used in an ef fort to destroy malignant tumors in patients and animals since 1892, when Coley (13) initiated clini cal applications. No systematic study of the histopathologic effects of mixed bacterial toxins on ex perimental tumors has been found. Several good studies of changes elicited in tumors by products from single bacterial strains have been published (...
متن کاملMixed bacterial toxins in the treatment of tumors. IV. Response of methylcholanthrene-induced, spontaneous, and transplanted tumors in mice.
Different preparations obtained from cultures of Serratia marcescens and Strepto coccus pyogenes were tested in seven spontaneous, induced, and transplanted tumors of mice, and Rous sarcoma in chicks. The toxins were found to be effective against Krebs-2 carcinoma causing regression of well established tumors. They were found to be ineffective against Sarcoma 180, Gardner's Lymphosarcoma 6C3HED...
متن کاملThe Effects of WW2/WW3 Domains of Smurf2 Molecule on CD4+CD25+/CD4+ Proportion in Spleen of 4T1 Tumor Bearing BALB/c Mice
Background: TGF-β has long been considered as the main inducer of Tregs in tumor microenvironment and is the reason for the aberrant number of Tregs in tumor-bearing individuals. Recently, it has been suggested that the enzyme arginase I is able to mediate the induction of Tregs in a TGF-β-independent fashion. The recombinant WW2/WW3 domains from smad ubiquitination regulatory factor 2 molecule...
